  • About the Edition

Street art and graffiti are a familiar sight in cities around the world. Neighbourhoods painted with murals are popular with tourists and tagged walls become backdrops for fashion shoots and music videos. Banksy is a global celebrity whose work sells for astonishing prices. Millions of photographs of street art are saved on smartphones, uploaded to social media and displayed on t-shirts and other merchandise. But are street art and graffiti the same thing, or do they have different histories, meanings and practitioners? Who makes street art? Who buys it? Can it be exhibited in a gallery or must it be located on the street? Why have museums started collecting street art? Is there a commercial market for street art? And will it even exist in the future? This strikingly illustrated book explores every aspect of street art, from making and photographing it to stealing and selling it. Artists working in the streets reveal both their passion for street art and ambivalence about its commodification. The rise, fall and rise again of street art in the art market is told through revealing encounters with collectors and auction houses in Paris, London, Melbourne and beyond. Based on twenty years of research in the graffiti and street art scenes, Street Art World is the first book to provide a history and context for the words and images that appear in cities all around the world. Inviting the reader into a realm that is usually hidden, it will enthral all those who enjoy this global phenomenon.

In Street World: Urban Art and Culture from Five Continents (which you might recall from this old piece on Beautiful Losers, the excellent documentary about contemporary street art culture), Roger Gastman, Caleb Neelon and Anthony Smyrski examine street art culture from a holistic standpoint, as it relates to other forms of urban expression. Global Street Art is an art platform created in London for artists to receive exposure for their murals, graffiti and connect with other artists.

The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti, Rafael Schacter. This is one of the best books on street art and it earned a spot on my shelf because it manages to comprehensively cover both great street art cities and the artists who spray them. Each section features background on a city such as Barcelona or Melbourne along with a several artist profiles for each location. Tom Wolfe's small but potent book charts the course of Modern Art. The stylistic writing is as witty and provocative as Wolfe's earlier book "Radical Chic." The genesis of the book's title stems from a revelation that Wolfe obtained from an art exhibit's review in the New York Times. The critic had basically stated that to view art/5.

From impressive newcomers like Rafael Schacter's "The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti" () to classics like "Spraycan Art" () by Henry Chafant and James Prigoff, the development of street art, as a distinct genre of art with a rich history of literature, is the inspiration for this list. There are a lot great books, and it's a tough list to : Ed Fuentes. Street Art has become a major contributor to modern contemporary art. This unique form of art that has it's origins in graffiti can be seen in most cities around the world and has become a platform of expression for artists worldwide.
