This collection of pamphlet material supplements the Library's cataloged collection of books related to the Catholic Apostolic Church. The pamphlets and books were acquired in from the Bodleian Library in Oxford and presumably represent duplicates in the collection which came to the Bodleian from Norman Priddle, librarian of the Catholic Apostolic Church. Out of this sprang the Allgemeine Christliche Apostolische Mission (ACAM) in and the Dutch branch of the Restored Apostolic Mission Church (at first known as Apostolische Zending, since officially registered as Hersteld Apostolische Zendingkerk (HAZK)). This later became the New Apostolic Church.
Edward Irving captured London; society crowded after him, drawn by his oratory. It was he who introduced the modern idea of speaking in tongues. He founded what is called the Catholic Apostolic Church in Gordon Square and there he developed strange ideas. The sect of the Irvingites was founded by the celebrated Edward Irving, the friend of Carlyle. They have a very handsome church in Gordon Square, London, and numerous chapels scattered through the city. This sect, which once had twelve apostles, appointed by Irving, calls itself the “Catholic Apostolic Church” and has an elaborate ritual.
